A LIFE ORGANISED AROUND MANAGING TMJ PAIN

Just Wanting a Day Without TMJ Pain

You are living a life half full because each day is dominated by managing TMJ pain. You long for the ordinary, simple joys of life: being able to ride a bike, sleep on your side, hug your family with full force, eat whatever food you please, soft or hard.

Your hope has worn thin after seeing providers and having treatments that have not worked. Providers who have been stumped and suggested that this is a permanent way of life now, that it is just a result of stress, that there is nothing more they can do.

You may have even seen a PT already, or two, or three. But, there is a huge difference between a general PT and a specialist: typical PT doctorate programs contain only a handful of hours of craniofacial training, whereas a CCTT certification demands at least 2000 hours of TMJ and craniofacial specialist experience just to qualify.

Sharon is one of only 75 CCTT-certified craniofacial physical therapists in all of North America, one of three CCTT-certified physical therapists in all of Pennsylvania. Her purpose is to restore you to a whole version of yourself, all in the comfort of your own home.

TMJ pain doesn't have to paralyze your life forever.

WHAT SHARON TREATS

TMJ and Beyond.

Sharon's CCTT certification and 28 years of patient experience mean she has worked with the full range of TMJ and craniofacial conditions, including many that have been missed or misinterpreted elsewhere. If you don't see your condition listed, getting in touch is the best place to start.

"It hit my heart the moment I walked in. I knew this was what I needed to do. I wanted to be one of those therapists, the ones who help the people nobody else can."

What his looks like in practice:

  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ/TMD)

  • Jaw pain, clicking, locking, and popping

  • TMJ surgery rehabilitation

  • Facial pain and myofascial pain

  • Cervicogenic headaches

  • Tension headaches related to jaw and neck

  • Occipital neuralgia

  • Cervical disc herniation and bulge

  • Cervical radiculitis and spondylosis

  • Cervical spinal stenosis

  • Cervical facet impingement

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation including ACDF and cervical laminectomy

  • Torticollis

  • Whiplash and post-whiplash symptoms

  • Abnormal posture and postural pain

  • Ear pain and ear fullness related to TMJ

  • Tinnitus-related jaw dysfunction

  • Bruxism and teeth grinding

  • Trismus and restricted jaw opening

Note: TMJ often shows up alongside ear fullness, tinnitus, dizziness, and facial numbness. If you have been told those symptoms are unrelated to your jaw, that may be worth a second look. Sharon can tell you in your consultation whether she can help.

WHAT SPECIALIST TMJ CARE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

This Is What It Looks Like When Someone Is Trained Exactly for TMJ Care.

Sharon does not just hold an elite craniofacial and temporomandibular credential. She works differently:

"It hit my heart the moment I walked in. I knew this was what I needed to do. I wanted to be one of those therapists, the ones who help the people nobody else can."

  • She pulls the whole TMJ picture together -  Sharon takes a full history and integrates every previous diagnosis, test result, and treatment attempt. She assesses the relationship between the jaw, the cervical spine, posture, the nervous system, and your daily environment.

  • She comes to your home - For a condition aggravated by stress, travel, and sensory overload, being treated somewhere already calm and familiar matters more than it might seem. Your nervous system is not already wound up before the session begins. Sharon can observe your desk setup, your sleep position, your daily habits, the environmental factors that may be contributing to or worsening your symptoms. No clinic can offer that.

  • She does not dismiss what she cannot immediately explain — When the scan does not show an obvious answer, Sharon does not send you away. She has the expertise to work with complexity. When additional tests are needed, she refers and brings those findings back into your care.

  • She does not give up — She does not discharge you the moment the acute pain eases. She stays in it, adjusts, and keeps looking until she has found a way to help. Even a patient who had seen 20 providers says that the first session was the first time anyone had actually listened to the whole story and connected everything.

"These patients would say: I have had pain for 20 or 30 years. Nobody can help me. And after the first session, they already feel better. I just really enjoy being a part of giving a life back to somebody. Their lives that were almost dying become alive again." Dr. Sharon Tatum, PT, DPT, MPT, CCTT (learn more about Sharon on her bio page)
